After a prolonged winter, Perth has finally welcomed the pleasant days of spring. As spring rejuvenates our surroundings, seniors from Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) eagerly await outdoor activity schedules. In response to the enthusiasm from our seniors, Evergreen College's excursion team organised a brief trip to Hillarys in late September.
Situated around 20km northwest of Perth CBD, Hillarys is a lively and enchanting coastal suburb. Named after an early settler, Bertram John Hillary, Bertram constructed a boat shed on Hillarys Beach during the Great Depression, relying on fishing for sustenance. For many years, Bertram and his family were the lone residents of Hillarys. Participating in World War I, especially the Gallipoli campaign, Bertram tragically lost his right eye. During World War II, the Australian army was stationed at Hillarys, dubbing the area "Hillarys Beach". By the early 20th century, Hillarys had become one of Perth's premier seaside resorts.
Seniors from the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs arrived at Hillarys Boat Harbour – one of Perth's most frequented harbours. This location is home to numerous sailing clubs and is pivotal to yacht racing in Western Australia. They strolled along the timbered pathways of the harbour, enjoying the charm of Hillarys Beach and the diverse array of shops and dining establishments. The scenic outdoors had a rejuvenating effect on them.
Next stop, a culinary journey to the local Dome Cafe, where our seniors indulged in delightful conversations while savouring their meals. For a light exercise after lunch, everyone visited the surrounding shops to ensure they returned with memories and souvenirs. Outdoor engagements are immensely beneficial for seniors. Such excursions broaden their perspective, allowing them to relish natural beauty and absorb the relaxed Australian lifestyle. It also serves as a means to foster interpersonal connections, alleviate feelings of isolation, and truly make the most of their golden years.
Chung Wah has been servicing the WA community since 1909, dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Moreover, Chung Wah CC has over 35 years of professional care experience helping seniors and people with disability improve their well-being and better integrate into the community. In 2023, we're promoting our theme, "Embrace, Elevate & Flourish", and aim to build a better community for all.
