Celebrating Mother's Day

On the second Sunday of May each year, we celebrate Mother's Day. Many of us are familiar with the story of the American Anna Jarvis, who founded Mother's Day, and the tradition of wearing carnations. However, did you know China's Mother's Day celebration has different intentions from the Americans?

In recent years, Chinese Confucian scholars have even proposed "Chinese Mother's Day" to express gratitude for the tremendous maternal love in their own way. Chinese people regard Meng Mu (Mencius' mother) as the paradigm and set the second day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, the day Meng Mu gave birth to Mencius, as the "Chinese Mother's Day". Mothers would traditionally receive Hemerocallis flowers from their children on this special day. After all, Mother's Day is a special day for us to celebrate a mother's selfless love, care and support as we grow up. However, for older people, Mother's Day has another deep meaning. On this day, seniors not only reminisce and miss their mothers who have passed but also express gratitude to their family members, friends and caregivers who care for them.

Last week, Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) arranged some festive activities at the Balcatta and Willetton Community Hubs to celebrate Mother's Day with our seniors. With the assistance of our staff and volunteers, the seniors made special Mother's Day cards. Then they left their heartfelt thanks and wishes on the completed cards and sent them to relatives, friends or caregivers of their choice. This event allows the seniors to have a meaningful Mother's Day. Every senior has their own Mother's Day story in their hearts, and they also communicate through the social platform of Chung Wah CC. Many good memories were revealed during this activity, and everyone had a wonderful time creating their interpretation of their Mother's Day card.
