Chung Wah Community Care Talks About Healthcare Rights

Last week, Chung Wah Community Care (CWCC) held an insightful health talk at the Willetton and Balcatta Community Hubs. Nadeen from the Health Consumers' Council WA led the talk called "Rights & Responsibilities in Healthcare." It aimed to help everyone feel more confident about visiting the doctor or hospital.

The talk started with a story about Mrs. Chen, who had severe stomach pain. Her husband quickly took her to the hospital, where she got some medicine. The doctors said she needed more tests, but Mrs Chen didn't understand what was needed next and missed her follow-up appointments. This story shows how important it is to know about your healthcare rights and what you should do.

Nadeen explained the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights, which ensures all patients are treated well in the healthcare system. Patients also have the right to actively question their medical team to ensure they understand their treatments, examinations, and medications. This includes:

– Is there a need for this specific test, treatment, or procedure?

– What are the risks?

– Are there simpler, safer options?

– What if we choose no treatment?

– How much will it cost?

Patients are entitled to provide feedback or lodge complaints about their healthcare provider, whether in person or online. Feedback should be directed to healthcare professionals, managers, or patient/client liaisons to ensure improvement in service quality.

Besides rights, patients have responsibilities such as providing health information to their medical team, respecting medical staff and other patients, following medical advice, and keeping appointments. Fulfilling these responsibilities helps the medical team provide the best possible care.
