"Don't let nonsense clutter your mind" has always been Mrs. Leung's guiding principle. The essence of this saying is not to allow negative emotions, pessimistic thoughts, and unnecessary worries to take up space in our minds. This way, we can maintain a clear head and focus on positive things. Born in Vietnam, Mrs. Leung grew up amidst the chaos and turbulence of wartime. Despite growing up in poverty, she never lost hope. She persevered with her education and eventually became a Chinese teacher. During the war, Mrs. Leung witnessed countless tragedies.

She saw firsthand the death, displacement, and suffering of many people. These experiences made her resilient and appreciative of life. In 1975, when the war ended, Mrs. Leung's eldest son migrated to Australia. By 1991, she, alongside her husband and daughter, also made their way to Australia. In this new land, she faced numerous challenges. Lacking English skills and local work experience, she had to work in a factory, sometimes with erratic hours. Despite these challenges, Mrs. Leung remained positive. She diligently learned English and actively integrated into Australian society. In 2003, a workplace accident in the factory led to her early retirement. Post-retirement, Mrs. Leung pursued an independent life. She mastered various ways to manage her daily shopping and travels independently. She also actively participated in activities at the Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) community hubs. Not only did she make many friends there, but her life also became fulfilling.

Mrs Leung's motto, "Don't let nonsense clutter your mind", resonates throughout her life. She has consistently maintained a positive attitude, striving to overcome adversity and pursue a life of independence and happiness. Her life philosophy can be summarised as:

– Stay positive when facing difficulties and challenges,

– learn to let go of negative emotions and focus on the positive,

– adapt to change and continually learn and grow, and

– seek independence and live authentically.

Mrs. Leung's story reminds us that with a positive mindset, we can overcome any challenge and lead a fulfilling, happy life. Her principle of not allowing "nonsense to clutter one's mind" is a valuable life philosophy worth adopting. Her story isn't just a personal narrative; it's a reflection of the lifestyle choices of older people. Traditional views suggest elders should rely on their children for care. Yet, Mrs. Leung's story is a fine example of how seniors can lead independent lives and chase their happiness. Moreover, her life principle has universal implications. It's not only relevant to the seniors but to everyone. By letting go of negative emotions and focusing on the positive, we can lead happier, more fulfilled lives.
