Eat Right – Be Bright

Made fresh daily! The healthy and nutritional meals at our Chung Wah Community Care (Chung Wah CC) community hubs are delicious and made with love by a group of volunteers.

Every day, they design healthy recipes and seek continuous improvement in the kitchen, demanding the highest nutritional food for seniors. As a result, we constantly receive raving reviews on various dishes.

According to the latest statistics, diabetes and hypertension are more prevalent among the elderly, so we invited Ishar Multicultural Women's Health Service to enlighten us on food and nutrition. Presented by Janine (Dietician) and Jenny (Nutritionist), who comes from a Chinese background and has a good understanding of the ethnic foods and dining culture.

The topic of this workshop is "Healthy eating for senior Australian Chinese". Jenny further defines healthy eating and associated misconceptions. There are five categories of nutritional food: 1) grains, 2) vegetables, 3) fruits, 4) proteins – meat/fish, and 5) dairy products. These five essential nutrients provide carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, and vitamins for the body. Through an interactive teaching approach, both presenters elaborate on a well-balanced diet, such as dietary measurement and intake. For the Asian community, tofu, red beans, barley, and herbal soups are excellent for optimatising the body's yin (cooling) and yang (heaty) balance. In addition, understanding Glycemic Index(GI) is essential for people with diabetes. For example, rice is considered to have a high level of GI. Therefore, it should be paired with vegetables to balance the blood sugar level.
Volunteers were very engaged throughout the training, and everyone received a certificate at the end of a very well-received workshop. We thank Janine and Jenny for providing such an informative workshop.
